I think Mantis is really strong out the gates. Probably one of the top 4 clans.

Whhheeeeee!!!!!!!!!
As a naval action I can set your force to 0 after the combat segment, I don't know about you but IF that card makes my deck, which I doubt, I am going to play it as late as possible in the battle. Nothing worse than narfing a card early in the battle to see it then be the card used to play Suprising Resistance or something else like that.

Our CE base personality set is pants. It's all over the map with several cards having no focus and crappy PH on all our commanders. I also think the boxable swarm scout theme will get dominated by Fury and Imperial Census, leaving us the follower box...
Meh. Winds favor us! |
Josh is overly pessimistic ... although correct to worry about Fury, to be sure.
I happen to think Mantis will be good from the outset of CE, although we will have a very bad matchup vs. Crab, whom I think will be very tough out of the gate.

I think Sho's basically got the right of it, we're in a weak position and lacking any noticeably real support.
Things is going to be reaaaal janky for us for a while come CE.

Duncan knows what he's talking about. |
Not if he's saying that Low Stance is good as a naval action. Which is a part that Moriya left out (That he made his statement about it being good in the context of good actions to take with the naval reaction).

Low Stance
Focus Effect: Before this duel’s resolution, negate all bonuses to each focused card’s Focus Value.
Battle: Target your unbowed Samurai Personality: Target an enemy Personality. After this Combat Segment ends, reduce his Force to 0.
Gold 0
Focus 4 |

Low Stance is crap for a Naval or early-in-the-battle action.
Scenario: Military vs Military
Us: I Navally Low Stance your Crab/Spider/Ninja/Unicorn beatstick.
Them: Okay, I Kami Unleashed while he still has force and actually do something with my action.
Scenario: Military vs Honor
Us: I Navally Low Stance your Courtier/Shugenja/Lion pud.
Them: Okay, I Weigh the Cost to get out of there and actually do something with my action.
In either case, we could switch them out with Unpredictable Strategy, but then they still get to take the next action with the personality we believed was a threat to our plans.

I completely disagree with your sentiment about Mantis sucking.
I totally agree with your sentiment that CE will be janky in the beginning.

Why we're even considering playing Low Stance in military mantis decks? 0_o Are we that desperate?

well considering we have a history of building stuff out of gyuden gotei , who knows
I made my scout/cmd deck , it does suck and not a genius deck builder that can turn nothing in to something , but the important thing . first time in 2 years I had actuall fun playing mantis [well probablly more I really didnt like ToE ] and you know me am the doom and gloom guy , so that does count for something . DT you have my kudos here , just please dont fuck this up .

This pretty much sums it up. Although, I think that we are going to channel our Gold Edition jankiness and make something competitive. I got it..... rats and onis on boats!

Low stance is amazing in an environment where nobody play cards that move them home.

I just don't like force reductions and force pumps. I prefer to get rid off my opponent's personalities. That's why I started playing mantis. And that particular force reduction triggers before resolution segment... so guy targeted with this card is still protected by his force.
I'm not saying that Low Stance is a bad card. It's actually very good. But not in pure military IMHO.

... and nobody plays cards that have cost bowing (Unexpected Intimidation, W. Defense, Kami Unleashed etc. etc.). Even in an environment where all that is true it still sucks as a naval action since it has a delayed effect that only kicks in at the conclusion of a battle. You gain nothing from having played this as your naval action... it may as well not be performed.
